Free WiFi costs $1.20 each time Andrew Board
Nelson’s free Wi-Fi service has been a hit with tourists, but the service is costing ratepayers more than a $1 every time it’s used. Figures released from Nelson City Council show that 26,595 users had logged onto the free internet service since it was launched on November 1 last year, with that projected to reach around 35,000 users before its first anniversary. But with an annual budget of $44,000, it means the cost of each connection to ratepayers will be around $1.20. Free WiFi in the CBD was the idea of city promotions group Uniquely Nelson but was taken over by the council before it was launched. The service is now being reviewed by the council and the findings will be put to the governance committee on October 1. “Part of the review will exam-
ine the level of service being paid for – we started with a high level of support as the system was new and it was expected that there would be teething problems. So there may be scope for further savings once the review is completed,” says a council spokesperson. Governance committee chair Ian Barker says he couldn’t comment on the costs as he hasn’t seen the results of the review. “But I’m happy to review it and ensure we’re getting the best deal for ratepayers,” he says. Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy Madigan says it is still early days for the service but it is having a positive impact. “It’s still fledging, but we’re happy with it. Locals are using it to search for local information, but tourists are using it for Facebook and stuff like that.” She says as soon as people log into the free WiFi it takes them

Lioness jam-makers get to work Jessie Johnston
Things were getting heated in the kitchen last Saturday as the Lioness Club of Nelson made their annual gifts of home-made jam. The activity was part of the group’s service to the community and saw 200 jars of jam cooked, bottled
and labelled, ready to go out with the Meals on Wheels dinners over the next month or so. Every home in the Nelson area who receives Meals on Wheels will also get a jar of jam, made possible with the help of Nelson Intermediate who regularly give the Lioness group use of their
technology kitchen. The Lioness Club of Nelson projects group was also busy last Saturday. Set up in the other half of the kitchen, they were churning out cheese rolls which will be sold to raise money for Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

Fire Service says a lack of working smoke alarms is concerning
Andrew Board The Fire Service says Nelsonians are flirting with disaster by not having working smoke alarms installed in their homes. Over the past month the Nelson Fire Service has attended four fires where the owners of the home haven’t had a smoke alarm. Station officer Craig Davies says it was fortunate they started during the day, so the occupants could see the smoke and get out.
“Potential for disaster is huge, in recent times people have been lucky. Chances are the luck will run out.” He says the fires they attended included homes with elderly and young children. “We really want to make sure people are up to speed on smoke alarms. We need people to sort it out and get them installed, or make sure the batteries still work.” Craig says that people need to have a smoke alarm in every

If you’re lucky enough to be awake, you’ll get away with it, but if you’re asleep, you won’t be so lucky.”

A protest in opposition to the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement attracted hundreds of people to Nelson’s CBD on Saturday morning and caused traffic problems as members of the march poured out onto the intersection on Hardy and Rutherford Sts. The protest started at 1903 Square with speeches, before travelling down Hardy St and through the Nelson Market. Protesters then blocked off the Rutherford/Hardy St intersection for around 15 minutes with police trying to hold back the crowd, keeping at least one lane open for a short time near the Nelson Cadet Unit base. Sergeant David Lauer says, while police were made aware of the protest and had spoken to the organiser that morning confirming numbers, he was not impressed with the decision to block traffic at the busy intersection. “It was a disappointing part of the protest,” he says. “We were assured marshals would keep protesters off the roads and we will be following up on this.” Event organiser Graeme O’Brian says some members of the group just started standing

School bus crash near Atawhai: A school bus carrying 20 children was involved in an accident on Friday morning near Todd Bush Rd. Senior fire officer Symon Mitchell says the driver of the car was taken to hospital but was not in a serious condition. Gladstone Rd traffic now on camera: The wait will soon be over for frustrated drivers who have been seeing red at the lights on Gladstone Rd, with a new camera system being installed to help improve traffic flows. The phasing of lights at three intersections on Gladstone Rd, which are owned by the New Zealand Transport Agency and cost $4.3 million, have been an issue for drivers since they were installed in 2009. But the good news is that NZTA has installed cameras at the lights to relay information to its Traffic Operations Centre in Wellington so that traffic flow can be improved by remote control.

Intruder sexually assaults woman: A Richmond couple were disturbed in their bedroom in the early hours of Sunday last week. Police have now confirmed that the female occupant of the house was sexually assaulted during the incident. Police are urging people to ensure their own safety by locking doors and windows and keeping vehicles secure at all times, after the woman was sexually assaulted in her bedroom. Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston says the incident, which occurred about 3am on Sunday morning in the Gladstone Rd area, was very serious and police were concentrating on locating the offender involved.

A Nelson mum won the Community Spirit award at the regional Pride of New Zealand awards in Christchurch last week. Rebekah Malthus founded Project Butterfly as a support network for parents who had lost children. The project has created the butterfly path in Fairfield Park and also runs workshops to help families. She was one of six category winners at the South Island regional awards, which aim to celebrate deserving heroes throughout the country. Now, Rebekah will head to Auckland for the national awards next month. There she will take on other Community Spirit winners from the three North Island regions. Rebekah says she was shocked to win. “There were some amazing people there and I’ve been looking at the people
who won in the North Island and they’re all doing amazing things, so to even be nominated is huge.” Another Project Butterfly member, Aine Burn, was nominated in the Fundraiser of the Year category. Rebekah says she wishes more could have been nominated. “It’s not about me, it’s just that my name goes on everything, but I wish we could get some of the others that have helped recognised as well. Sometimes I feel that I get all the accolades but I would have never been able to achieve it without all the other people that helped.” The national award winners will be selected from the regional award winners by a panel of judges. Free fruit trees for kindergartens A local gardener is on a mission to keep Nelson kids healthy, and is donating his time and resources to plant fruit trees in all 19 kindergartens throughout the region. Graham Smith from Garden Property Services Ltd has teamed up with Waimea Nurseries and Green Waste To Zero, and will be planting every kindergarten from Nelson to Golden Bay with four fruit trees - a plum tree, an apple tree, a feijoa tree, and a mandarin tree. With two young children of his own, Graham says he has “seen firsthand” the sugar-filled lunch boxes kids are bringing to kindergarten. “I felt the need to do something about it,” he says. “Our mission is to try and shape the health and well-being of current and future generations of children by providing better access to fresh fruits and vegetables.” Graham approached Trish Casey, CEO of the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association, with his idea, and before long it was “all go,” with the planting kicking off last Tuesday at Victory Square

Children are a big part of the planting process and are encouraged to help dig the holes, plant the trees, shovel in the compost, and stamp down the earth. “We hope to educate them in the process from the start, and when they are established they will have the freedom of choice to pick fresh fruit,” says Graham. “Fruit can be quite expensive at times, so this should also give the kindergartens an opportunity to provide fresh fruit to kids throughout the year. With proper pruning and training you can get bumper crops from dwarf trees.” Trish Casey says the trees will be a great opportunity to teach children about growing food in our own backyards and making use of the produce. “We are very appreciative of these two companies for their contribution to our kindergartens,” she says. Nelson commemorated the 70th anniversary of VJ Day at Rutherford Park on Saturday. Along with members of the public were some veterans from the second world war, each with their own memories of the event. Allan Carson was in the Air Force with number 19 fighter squadron, as an intelligence officer, when the war ended. His job was to brief the pilots before their missions and take their reports upon return. They were in New Britain on VJ Day and, after hearing rumours for weeks, were finally informed of Japan’s unconditional surrender.
they were at peace and had mixed feelings over the two bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Murray Rowe joined the Navy in 1940 for 12 years, serving in the Mediterranean and the Pacific.
After the surrender, his squadron stayed and toured Japan for four months but, before going home, they were taken into Nagasaki. With radiation still active, it was something he is still suffering from today.

Kate Russell Nelson brides are being called upon to dust off their wedding gowns for this year’s ‘bride of the year’ competition, which is being run as part of the Nelson Wedding Show this October. To be eligible to enter, brides must have gotten married between 30 April 2014 and 30 April 2015, and of course, still need to be married. Show organiser Casey Stevenson says that although it is normally the groom who enters the bride, they also get plenty of entries from bridesmaids and
mothers-of-the-bride. “Whoever enters the bride needs to send in a photo of the bride and groom, and a blurb about them and why they should be selected,” she says. The entries will be narrowed down to a top five, who will get their hair and make-up professionally done on the day of the show. The overall winner will win a mystery weekend escape, and there will also be a people’s choice award, as voted on show day, which will be a pearl necklace and earrings from Glen James Jewellers. Judging the brides this year will
be Glen Tomlinson from Glen James Jewellers, Sarah Board from Nelson Weekly and Tonia Brydon from Tonic Hair Culture and Beauty, who is also in charge of hair and make-up on the day. Brides will also have the opportunity to ‘trash’ their wedding gown at the show. “It’s just a bit of fun on the day,” says Casey. Entries can be sent to info@ nelsonweddingshow.co.nz and close mid-September. The Nelson wedding show is being held on Sunday October 4 at Saxton Stadium. Entry is $10 per person (kids under 16 free).

Region’s top yachts on show
Nelson’s most luxurious yachts will be on display this Saturday, in a nautical version of a garden trail or kitchen trail. People wanting to join the trail will purchase a ticket in advance, which will give them the opportunity to come on board some of Nelson’s luxury boats based in the Nelson Marina and at Guyton’s wharf. There are 14 boats in the tour and participants can make their way individually around the marina to visit the yachts and launches available for viewing. The event is to help raise money for the Nelson College for Girls sailing team, which will be representing New Zealand at the 2015
Interdominion Team Sailing Championships in Canberra in September. The luxury boat tour will be held this Saturday August 22, with a back-up of Sunday 23 in case of bad weather. Organiser Toni Chittenden says the trail should have wide appeal. “The men would love to see the engine rooms, the sailors the equipment, and for those like me, the opportunity to see the interior decorating and fit-outs.” For tickets please contact Toni or tickets are also available from Burnsco Marine and Nelson College for Girls Reception, $25 per person.

Hira School is gearing up for its biggest fundraiser of the year, the Valley to View Adventure Bike and Hike day, this Sunday. Joining forces for the second year running with Happy Valley Adventures, the public will get a unique opportunity to access private Delaware Bay farmland, as well as extensive trails on Happy Valley land at Cable Bay. Event spokesperson Kirsten McGhie says the public has a window of opportunity to view some of the most spectacular Delaware and Cable Bay scenery, either on foot or mountain bike. She says following on from the success of last year’s event, Happy Valley will be offering discount sky wire rides, the Tree Tops cafe will be open to bikers and walkers, and there’ll be kids’ paintball and Argo rides. Council confirm funding for WW1 soldier statue
A statue of a soldier is soon to take pride of place in Marsden Valley Cemetery, as a nod to those who served in World War 1. Nelson City Council’s community services committee confirmed at their meeting on Thursday that they will grant $20,000 to the Returned Services Association towards the statue, which will go behind the flagpole at the RSA section of the cemetery. The statue is planned to be unveiled on Anzac Day 2016, which also marks the RSA’s 100th anniversary. RSA spokesperson Mason Robinson, who is the driving force behind the project, says that the council’s contribution is “great news,” but another $30,000 - $40,000 is still required for the project to go ahead. He says they will be applying for funds from Veterans Affairs and community trusts to make up the additional costs. “The council have given us the base which we have to now leverage, and we’re very confident we’ll achieve the additional funding,” says Mason. Councillor Pete Rainey says that it’s important that the council “steps up” and plays a role in supporting the project. “I know it has been discussed for some time to do the statue and it’s good we can get behind it and help to commemorate the memory of WW1,” he says. Mason says the idea for the statue came to him about three years ago, as he thought the RSA section of the cemetery needed a landmark. “It will just give the area a bit more presence, and acknowledge the fallen soldiers,” he says. The statue will be of a WW1 soldier who will be respectfully bowing his head for his comrades, and stand at around seven foot tall. Donations and bequests for the statue are gratefully being accepted. Anyone who would like to make a donation can do so by contacting RSA President Barry Pont on (03) 548 6815.

Support network a 'lifesaver' for parents
When Andrea Lee’s son was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, she didn’t know who to turn to. But she soon found a local support network called Parent to Parent, and has found their help invaluable ever since. Last week was Parent to Parent’s awareness week, and like Andrea, many families in Nelson have found great support and friendship in their services. The nationwide non-for-profit organisation offers guidance and support for families who have a child with a disability or health impairment. Andrea’s 11 year old son, Andre, who attends Nelson Central School, was three
years old when he was diagnosed with fragile X syndrome, which is a genetic condition which causes learning disabilities and cognitive impairment. “I used to call him my dream baby,” says Andrea. "But then he started missing his milestones. We got referred to a paediatrician and genetic screening revealed what was happening." “I felt pretty lost and was aware I needed to find out what was available in the community. I saw an advertisement in the paper for a Parent to Parent coffee group meeting, so I went along and haven’t looked back since.” Andrea still attends the monthly coffee
group, which provides parents with friendship, support, and local on-the-ground information on their child’s condition. “It really is a different experience raising a child with special needs,” says Andrea, who also has a 13 year old daughter. “Here I found another group of parents who got what I was going through. It didn’t work with my other friends as they had no idea what I was experiencing. Meeting these families was like a lifesaver.” Andrea went on to complete some of Parent to Parent’s free courses, such as advocacy support, renew workshops and support parent training. She then became the Nelson chairperson for five years before
stepping down to be on the national board, which she has done for the past three years. Parent to Parent are not just about coffee groups either, they organise family events, a mum's pamper weekend, and speakers who come and give up-to-date information on the sector. They also offer support to siblings, who often find the process just as tough, through a programme called SibSupportNZ. “It can be so hard and overwhelming, and Parent to Parent can make the journey a bit easier. ‘Only strap girls in private’ says old school manual Mahana School pupils have uncovered some fascinating historic items, including a teacher’s handbook that explains the finer points of corporal punishment, as they continue their search for the three time capsules buried somewhere in the school grounds. The school has been searching for the time capsules so that they can display their contents at the school’s centenary celebrations to be held from September 11 to 13. Although their search has so
far been unsuccessful, principal Justin Neal says the attic of the school’s oldest classroom, built in 1920, is proving to be a goldmine. One of the more interesting finds has been a booklet titled ‘ByLaws of Education in the District of Nelson 1932.’ Justin says the children have been fascinated by the section on corporal punishment which informs teachers, in great detail, when and how to administer the strap. “It says the teacher has to be fair

about using the strap because if it is used too much it indicates their discipline is too weak. It also says that senior girls can only be strapped in private and not in front of the rest of the class - it’s been very educational for the kids to learn about this.” Justin says they have also found an old valve radio, ink-wells that students used to dip their pens

Justin says the radio was “so old the kids didn’t even know what it was,” although he joked that “if you showed them a cassette player they wouldn’t know what that was, either”. The shields were for the Boys’ 220 Yards and Girls’ Skipping and dated back to 1917, two years after the school started. In the meantime, Justin says they will intensify their search for the time capsules.
“The kids are desperate to find them. From what I can gather there are three of them - one was buried in the 1960s and another at the 75th anniversary in 1975, and a third at some uncertain time under the old cobb hut that used to be here. “We will keep making inquiries in the community to try and find out if anyone knows where they were buried. There are still two or three families here that had grandparents at the school, so they might know something.”

Nelson rider wins winter cycling series

It wasn't quite a case of slow and steady wins the race, but Nelson rider Chris Heywood showed that consistency and enthusiasm count when he won the Ray White Winter Road Cycling series A grade title on Saturday. Chris wasn't the fastest rider in the 11-race series that concluded with a race around the Hope circuit on Saturday - that honour went to former Olympic road cyclist Robin Reid who won five of the sixes races he contested. Although Chris only had one win in the series, he took the A grade title with 93 points, 25 more than Robin, after racing consistently in the nine rounds he started. Chris Sharland was third on 61 points, finishing just ahead of Saturday's winner Hayden Squance on 59. B grade went down to the wire with Henry Kersten winning three races to finish on 106 points and edge out Brent Sturm on 92. Owen Hoggard won C grade ahead of Mark Goodall while Peter Harris won D grade. The women's competition was won by promising Nayland College student Emma Bateup, who is still in her first season of racing. Emma recorded 70 points racing in C grade to head off Jessica Hughes on 70 points and Suzie Wood on 60, with Georgia Cowman fourth and veteran Ann Rigg fifth on 49. The series was a family affair for many riders with race sponsor Brent Sturm competing against his son Jacob in B grade while his wife Tracey and daughter Sarah contested D grade. Christine van Hoppe and her husband Karl, daughter Karen, son-in-law Dean and granddaughter Shaane also raced in the series, which attracted 125 riders.

Intermediate kids get stuck in at winter tournament Broadgreen Intermediate received an A+ for sporting achievement in last week's Winter Tournament, winning five of the 17 titles contested by 1240 athletes from 14 schools across Nelson, Marlborough, Golden Bay and Buller. The annual tournament was held in Nelson on Thursday and Friday, with basketball, netball, rippa rugby, table tennis, hockey and volleyball at Saxton Field, rugby at Greenmeadows and Broadgreen Intermediate and soccer at Neale Park. Broadgreen won the girls basketball, A and C netball, mixed rippa rugby and rugby, while Nelson Prep won the boys' volleyball. "It's one of the biggest intermediate tournaments in the country," one of the organisers, Broadgreen's Paul Johnstone, says. "It's always held in Nelson and the three intermediate schools

Competition is tight in the Collegiate 1 grade of Nelson Netball as, after four rounds, four teams – Nelson College for Girls 9A, Nayland 9A, Waimea 9A and Waimea 10C - were unbeaten and tied on 16 points. The teams met at Saxton Courts on Saturday and while Nayland and Waimea 9A fought tooth and nail they could not be separated at the final whistle, when the score was 27 all. It was a very different story game in the second game between Nelson 9A and Waimea 10C. Five unanswered goals by Nelson midway through the first quarter put the writing on the wall that they would be difficult to contain, and they went into the first break with a 9–4 advantage. Waimea’s shooters Rose Miller and Emma Eggers were on target and had the perfect record of four from four, however they lacked opportunity as possession was often lost before the ball got to the offensive circle. It is with deep sadness that I announce Jamie’s passing on Wednesday 12 August 2015 at Nelson Hospital. He was an extremely brave man who fought the battle of his life with dignity, hope, strength and trust. He fought to the very end, trying to keep his mind and body active. RIP Jamie, you deserve peace. You earned it gallantly. Thank you for all the knowledge you shared with me. You were a mountain of knowledge on nearly every subject. Jamie was cremated last Friday after being driven for his final ride in his beloved retired ambulance, past our home then onto the crematorium, with his favourite songs blasting. He is survived by his three children, Steven, Aleasha and Mikayla. A memoriam for Jamie will be held at his home at 1.00pm on Wednesday 19 August at 45 Bishopdale Rd and everyone is welcome. Go in peace my love, I will never forget you. Lianne.
